Music Box of Horrors | Re-Animator

If you don’t have Re-Animator on your Halloween movie list you’re doing it wrong. This iconic underdog was shot in just eighteen days! Full of wickedly dope practical effects Re-Animator keeps you hooked. This movie has it all: kidnap, dead cats, comedy, supernatural aspects, love, and un-dead blood baths!  It is grossly absurd.

Re-Animator directed by Stuart Gordon is loosely adapted from  HP Lovecraft’s “Herbert West: Reanimator” and pulls heavily from the Frankenstein plot. It follows the experiments of  young med student, Herbert West. After various trials on animals, West is ready to test his re-animating serum on people. He convinces his new roommate, Dan Cain, to be the Igor to his doctor. Though the formula works in the reanimation of humans the results only backfires on West and Cain, endangering their lives and the lives of their peers.

It’s a low budget, high fun kind of movie. Some of my favorite aspects include the opening credits inspired by Alfred Hitchcock films sporting some SVU font, the grainy texture of the picture, and the electric green look they achieved for the reanimation fluid. The actors are so intense it elicits a giggle, only adding to the camp factor. Plus, every minute is full of grotesque practical effects-rumor has it, the team used twenty-four gallons of fake blood for this movie!

It’s Gore City baby! Population: You and a bag of popcorn.
